Camilla Belich to the Minister for Tertiary Education: How many board or committee appointments and reappointments, if any, did the Minister make since 27 November 2023 to any agency, department, Crown entity, company, or other organisation for which the Minister is responsible, broken down by organisation, role, the annual fee attached to the role, and whether that fee increased on appointment or reappointment, as at 8 June 2026?

Hon Penny Simmonds: I have appointed 12 members to the Board of the Tertiary Education Commission since 27 November 2023. Two of these 12 were subsequently appointed to the roles of Chair and Deputy Chair. I was the Minister responsible for Education New Zealand between 27 November 2023 and 24 January 2025 and appointed two members during that time, with one of those subsequently appointed as Deputy Chair. The attached table provides the requested detail, including how members’ roles and fees have changed since being appointed. For further detail about fee increase decisions, please refer to the response to written parliamentary question 13863 (2026) Further appointments and reappointments made during this period are listed in the attached document. I am responsible for setting the actual fees for the Industry Skills Boards in accordance with the Cabinet Fees Framework. Under clause 17(1) of Schedule 11 of the Education and Training Act 2020, I set the maximum fees for the governing councils of universities, wānanga and polytechnics in accordance with the Fees Framework, and the individual council must then determine the actual fee level up to the maximum. The actual fees payable are reported in the annual report of each university, wānanga and polytechnic, and are paid from within each institution’s baseline. Following the introduction of the 2025 Fees Framework, a fee review was carried out for the university and wānanga governing councils, and an increase was made to the maximum fee level with effect from 1 November 2025. As the Industry Skills Boards and polytechnic councils were established after the 2025 Fees Framework came into effect, the fees for these bodies were set in accordance with the ranges in the new Fees Framework.
