Hon Dr Ayesha Verrall to the Minister of Health: How many emergency department presentations were recorded at each of Kaitāia, Bay of Islands, Taumarunui, Hāwera, Thames, Te Nīkau Grey, Te Kūiti, Taupō, Wairoa, Whakatāne, Timaru, and Tokoroa hospitals in each month from 1 July 2025 to the most recent month for which complete data is held; and what is the year-on-year change for the 12 months ending in that month compared to the prior 12 months?

Hon Simeon Brown: This Government is focused on ensuring all New Zealanders have timely access to quality healthcare. We recognise that strong rural and regional hospitals are essential to delivering that care and to supporting the communities they serve. That is why we have restored a clear focus on performance and patient outcomes through the reintroduction of health targets. These targets provide greater transparency and accountability, ensuring the health system remains focused on what matters most: reducing wait times, improving access to treatment, and delivering better outcomes for patients. After years of declining performance across a range of health measures, our priority is to rebuild capacity, strengthen frontline services, and invest in the workforce needed to support growing demand. While there is more work to do, the Government is committed to making practical improvements that put patients first and support a health system that delivers timely, high-quality care for all New Zealanders.
