82390 (2024). Hon Jo Luxton to the Associate Minister of Agriculture: What provisions, if any, are in place for businesses and communities facing adverse weather events?

Hon Mark Patterson: The Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) works closely with the rural sector, community groups, and other government agencies to actively promote preparedness for adverse weather events. When an adverse weather event occurs, MPI responds by providing support to rural communities working alongside other emergency management agencies and organisations; and coordinates recovery efforts. MPI’s dedicated On Farm Support (OFS) unit has regional-based teams with local knowledge and expertise to provide tailored on-the-ground assistance. OFS connects farmers and growers to resources, advice, funding, and services from public, private, and industry sectors to help plan for adverse events. Rural Support Trusts are also available to assist rural communities. During or after an adverse event, Rural Support Trusts in affected areas may coordinate initial response or long-term recovery efforts, advocate for financial assistance, provide stress management, and provide mentors or colleagues from rural backgrounds.
