82379 (2024). Hon Jo Luxton to the Associate Minister of Agriculture: What provisions, if any, are in place for businesses and communities facing adverse weather events?
Hon Nicola Grigg: The Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) works closely alongside the rural sector, community groups, and other government agencies actively promoting readiness in preparation for an adverse weather event. If a major event occurs, MPI provides support to rural communities alongside other emergency management agencies and organisations, then coordinates a range of recovery assistance measures, such as funding to support the recovery of affected farmers, growers, whenua Māori owners, and rural communities. MPI’s dedicated On Farm Support (OFS) unit has established teams across regions in New Zealand with local knowledge and expertise to provide tailored on-the-ground assistance. OFS connects farmers and growers to resources, advice, funding opportunities and extension services offered by the public and private sector, and industry organisations to help plan for adverse weather events. Rural Support Trusts, which receive funding from OFS, are also available to support. This nationwide network directly assists rural communities and their individuals affected by adverse events. During or after an adverse event, Rural Support Trusts in affected areas may: *Coordinate an initial response to an event or a longer-term recovery effort; *Provide mentors or colleagues from rural backgrounds to talk over problems; *Advocate for financial assistance; and *Provide stress management services. MPI has an overview of further resources available on their website at the following link: https://www.mpi.govt.nz/funding-rural-support/adverse-events/resources-for-adverse-events/.
