82321 (2024). Dr Tracey McLellan to the Minister of Corrections: What progress, if any, has been made in improving the coordination of care for young people under 18 years transitioning between Oranga Tamariki and Corrections’ custody?
Hon Mark Mitchell: I am advised that Corrections and Oranga Tamariki work closely and have scheduled weekly meetings to coordinate information in preparation for any young people who may transition between the two agencies’ services. I am further advised that a robust assessment process to approve these transitions, which involves approval of the Chief Executive of Corrections and the Chief Executive of Oranga Tamariki or their delegates in addition to the court’s approval. Corrections and Oranga Tamariki also arrange, where practicable, a handover multi-disciplinary team meeting involving case leaders, social workers, custodial staff, case managers and health staff to allow a smooth handover.
