82312 (2024). Dr Tracey McLellan to the Minister of Corrections: What is the current occupancy rate of Mothers with Babies units across all three women’s prisons?

Hon Mark Mitchell: I am advised that Mother with Babies Units exist within all women’s prisons in New Zealand: Auckland Region Women’s Corrections Facility, Arohata Prison and Christchurch Women’s Prison. Occupancy rates in Mother with Babies Units at any time will vary and depend on a range of factors. This includes the eligibility of women in prison, whether they have chosen to apply, and whether applicants have been assessed and approved as suitable to safely reside in a Mothers with Babies Unit. I refer the member to the attached table which provides the occupancy rate at the Mothers with Babies Units as at 20 December 2024, broken down by prison.
