82157 (2024). Shanan Halbert to the Minister for Social Development and Employment: Does the Minister agree with Auckland City Missioner Helen Robinson who stated recently that state agencies referred people to food banks but did not fund them; and if not, why not?

Hon Louise Upston: I have been advised by the Ministry of Social Development (the Ministry) that the Ministry does not formally refer people to food banks which do not receive funding for food. On some occasions, staff may advise clients of local food banks which may include services that do not receive Ministry funding. If a client has had their application for a food grant declined, the Ministry can issue a letter advising of the decline and why. The letter is not a referral for a food bank but provides information on the decision to decline and assistance a client received and can be provided to food banks who will then decide if they can provide assistance. While the Ministry may discuss possible options, clients may choose to go anywhere.
