82001 (2024). Hon Jan Tinetti to the Minister of Education: Does the Minister agree with the Deputy Prime Minister in his answer to a supplementary question to Oral Question number 9 on December 12 when he said "and these guidelines will be replaced with better, more suitable, and more appropriate material"; if so what material, if any, in the current guidelines will be retained?

Hon Erica Stanford: The Education Review Office’s (ERO) recent report on relationships and sexuality education (RSE) found that there are diverse views about the guidelines amount students, school leaders, and the wider community. The review made a number of recommendations, including extending teaching and learning of RSE into senior secondary school, increasing the consistency of what is taught and when, and reviewing the consultation requirements for school boards. The Ministry of Education will convene a contributing group for the HPE learning area of the New Zealand Curriculum (which includes RSE) as part of the wider programme of work to develop a knowledge-rich, detailed, age-appropriate curriculum, underpinned by the science of learning. The group will be comprised of health and physical education experts, with particular focus given to strengthening healthy relationships and consent education. What, if any, content from the RSE guidelines will be included in the HPE curriculum will be determined as part of that process. This is also my response to written parliamentary questions 82002 and 82003 (2024).
