81871 (2024). Hon Jo Luxton to the Minister for Biosecurity: Has Biosecurity NZ or MPI provided any advice to the Minister of Biosecurity regarding funding challenges, and if so, what advice has been provided?

Hon Andrew Hoggard: I have not received any advice from MPI indicating any funding challenges regarding readiness or response activities, or across the wider biosecurity system. For significant biosecurity incursions internal resources are reprioritised onto the response. For a significant incursion, response and compensation costs are likely to exceed MPI’s capacity to manage within baseline or through reprioritisation. On 19 December 2024 I announced $20 million funding support to continue the H7N6 HPAI response, including to meet potential compensation costs. Any unspent funding will be returned.
