81855 (2024). Hon Jo Luxton to the Minister for Biosecurity: What analysis has been done regarding other areas of primary industries that could be affected by H5N1, for example cows, sheep, marine mammals, or native birds?
Hon Andrew Hoggard: No evidence of HPAI infection in cattle has been observed anywhere outside of the United States, despite HPAI being detected on a seasonal basis in northern hemisphere countries with large dairy industries. The spillover event from wild birds to cattle in the United States occurred in Texas in environmental conditions unlike those found in New Zealand, which indicates a low risk of the same occurrence in New Zealand. Infected cattle show a decrease in milk production accompanied by other signs of infection, but usually recover within two to three weeks.
