81846 (2024). Hon Jo Luxton to the Minister for Biosecurity: Has MPI developed specific guidelines or restrictions for shared milking facilities to prevent the cross-contamination of livestock in a scenario of H5N1 infecting dairy cows?
Hon Andrew Hoggard: Standard pasteurisation has been demonstrated to be effective at inactivating the HPAI virus which would make any exported pasteurised dairy product safe to trade. I am advised that the Ministry for Primary Industries has existing guidelines to ensure the continuity of milk processing in the event of a Foot and Mouth Disease outbreak which can be leveraged for HPAI. This includes measures at an individual farm level to limit the spread of the disease whilst minimising disruption to the sector.
