81815 (2024). Hon Jo Luxton to the Minister for Biosecurity: How will the Minister ensure compliance with the Animal Welfare Act in the event of an H5N1 outbreak?

Hon Andrew Hoggard: The poultry sector already undertakes depopulation activity under business-as-usual activity, such as the humane culling of injured or sick birds. Expectations for compliance with the Animal Welfare Act will not change in the event of H5N1. MPI’s depopulation guidelines and detailed specifications developed to support MPI and Industry preparedness meets the Animal Welfare Act requirements. MPI staff will monitor and support the compliance of the Animal Welfare Act during an H5N1 outbreak including ensuring industry compliance with the Animal Welfare Act.
