80836 (2024). Arena Williams to the Minister for Media and Communications: Does the Minister agree with Rural Women NZ that the proposal to reduce NZ Post deliveries in rural areas puts commercial viability ahead of the needs of rural communities?
Hon Paul Goldsmith: The proposals in the discussion document Moving towards a financially sustainable mail service relate to the minimum obligations in respect to NZ Post’s mail service (e.g. letters and postcards). Other parts of NZ Post’s business, such as its parcel service, are outside the scope of the postal Deed of Understanding. The minimum mail delivery frequency proposals were developed by taking actual usage of NZ Post’s mail service in both rural and urban areas into account, including the number of mail items received on average each week per address in urban and rural areas. I will consider all feedback received on the proposals prior to determining next steps for any changes to the Deed. This will include considering the needs of rural New Zealanders.
