80582 (2024). Dr Tracey McLellan to the Associate Minister of Health: What steps has she taken, if any, to ensure more equitable access to primary care services in rural areas, such as the 24-hour rural telehealth line, as outlined in Recommendation 11 in the Aged Care Commissioner's March 2024 report?
Hon Casey Costello: I am advised that work is ongoing on the Primary Care Development Programme, a programme focussed on strengthening primary and rural care for all New Zealanders. This programme is focussing on areas that will strengthen general practice including investment, funding, ensuring continuity of care, telehealth and developing the primary healthcare workforce. It encompasses work underway to improve equitable access to primary care in rural settings, including through telehealth services.
