78709 (2024). Steve Abel to the Minister for Biosecurity: What advice, if any, did the Minister, their Office or MPI seek regarding the use of carbon dioxide gassing method to cull chickens that tested positive for avian influenza (bird flu) at a chicken farm in North Otago?
Hon Andrew Hoggard: Advice from industry was that containerised gassing was the most feasible method of depopulation. This method is a key pillar of avian influenza management overseas and complies with New Zealand's Codes of Welfare. I also refer the member to my response for WPQ 78705 (2024) for additional context.
