76526 (2024). Hon Willow-Jean Prime to the Minister for Children: What, if any, consideration was given regarding the relationship between the Child Protection Investigation Unit and the proposals in the Oversight of Oranga Tamariki System Legislation Amendment Bill?
Hon Karen Chhour: Corrected reply: I am advised by Oranga Tamariki that prior to the decision to establish the Child Protection Investigation Unit, consideration was given to the relationship between the Child Protection Investigation Unit and the proposals in the Oversight of Oranga Tamariki System Legislation Amendment Bill. It was acknowledged they have separate purposes. I am further advised that the Oversight of Oranga Tamariki System Legislation Amendment Bill seeks to enhance oversight and monitoring of the Oranga Tamariki system by making structural changes to the Independent Children’s Monitor and the Children and Young People’s Commission, which are separate from Oranga Tamariki. I am also advised that the Child Protection Investigation Unit will be part of Oranga Tamariki but will be operationally independent from its day-to-day business.
