75402 (2024). Hon Jan Tinetti to the Minister of Internal Affairs: Does the Minister agree with Sky City Chief Executive Jason Walbridge that any new regime for online casino gambling should “Reward businesses that have been obeying the law, contributing to New Zealand [by paying tax] and minimising harm”, if not, why not?
Hon Brooke van Velden: Companies applying for an online gambling licence will need to meet strict entry criteria, including providing information on any breaches of legislation both here and in other jurisdictions. These include, but are not limited to, gambling regulations, privacy, payment of tax, and consumer protection.
New Zealand has World Trade Organisation and free trade agreement obligations that require licensing requirements and procedures to meet certain rules. Ensuring that licensing systems are non-discriminatory between domestic and offshore providers will help address any doubt that online casino gambling providers are being treated in accordance with obligations.
