75371 (2024). Francisco Hernandez to the Minister for ACC: What guidance, if any, has the Minister's departments, if any, given staff regarding attendance at Hikoi mō te Tiriti on 19 November 2024?

Hon Matt Doocey: I am advised that ACC provided the below advice to staff: “From Sunday 10 November, a hīkoi (march) is planned in support of Te Tiriti o Waitangi, travelling from Northland and arriving at Parliament on Tuesday 19 November. We respect the right of kaimahi to express their views by taking part in protest action. However, please be aware that you’ll need to take leave if you’re attending the hīkoi during your working hours. As public servants, we’re required to remain politically neutral at work. This generally doesn’t prevent you from being politically active outside of work. However, if you're attending hīkoi or demonstrations, you must avoid the perception that you’re representing ACC by, for example, removing any clothing or accessories with the ACC logo. We’re not expecting any specific protest activity directed towards ACC during the hīkoi, but please be mindful of your safety and security if you’re working near where it's taking place. In some towns and cities, there could be traffic disruption and more congestion than normal during people’s commute. If you think this may be an issue for you, please have a conversation with your people leader about arrangements to support you, for example starting work earlier or later. Whether you’re taking part in the hīkoi or happen to be in the area, please make sure you keep yourself safe. We’ll be monitoring the hīkoi during its journey and will update you if there are any potential impacts to our sites or people.”
