Hon Paul Goldsmith: I am advised KiwiRail operates a locomotive fleet of 210 locomotives and shunts. These locomotives can be deployed all around New Zealand depending on need, but generally speaking 121 operate in the North Island and 89 operate in the South Island. Allocations to specific routes change depending on the market demand – such as the production cycles of KiwiRail’s customers and domestic demand peaks around Christmas.
