72544 (2024). Hon Dr Megan Woods to the Minister of Climate Change: Does the Minister agree with the Climate Change Commission's findings in the Monitoring Report on emissions reduction that there are significant risks to meeting the 2030 biogenic methane target?
Hon Simon Watts: As outlined in the Government's response to the Commission's findings, central estimates from the July 2024 interim emissions projections (which were the latest available at the time of the response) suggest that biogenic methane emissions will just meet the 2030 target, but exceeding the target is within its uncertainty range.
The Climate Change Response Act 2002 requires that an emissions reduction plan includes policies and strategies sufficient to meet the relevant emissions budget. The second emissions reduction plan will be published before the end of the year and will outline the Government's policies and strategies to meet the second emissions budget, including the biogenic methane component.
