69715 (2024). Hon Kieran McAnulty to the Minister of Housing: Which Kāinga Ora social housing projects have been cancelled, if any, since 27 November 2023 broken down by location, total proposed number of units, land cost, and total spend?

Hon Chris Bishop: I refer the Member to the Attachment provided by Kāinga Ora - Homes and Communities, which provides a list of projects that have been cancelled since 27 November 2023, as at 30 September 2024. While these projects have been put through Kāinga Ora’s assessment process and a decision has been made to not progress with them as originally planned, it is important to note this doesn't mean development on these sites will never proceed. The projects may need to be re-designed to achieve best value for money or other options for the site will be considered, including using the home as is, renovating the home, or selling an older home and replacing it with a new home elsewhere. The cost spent to date is not necessarily sunk costs as design and planning work may be reused when projects are reworked, or infrastructure and civils work will be needed for future development and adds to the value of the land. At any point in time there will be a range of projects being rephased or paused or not proceeding due to a range of factors. For example, in the 10 months preceding 27 November 2023, the total number of projects that didn't proceed was 264, with a total spend of $29.6 million. Kāinga Ora’s existing build programme remains ongoing and they are on track to deliver their contracted additional social housing places as funded in Budget 2023.
