69339 (2024). Ingrid Leary to the Minister for Mental Health: Does the Minister agree with New Zealand Nurses Organisation (NZNO) mental health section chairwoman Helen Garrick that “We (nurses) have very limited powers in terms of being able to detain and work with people in those very severe crisis situations"; if so, what will he do to address this?
Hon Matt Doocey: I am advised that the Mental Health Act provides relevant health professionals, such as Duly Authorised Officers, with the legal power to provide treatment to those who are acutely mentally unwell. Similarly, Mental Health & Addiction clinicians receive training on de-escalation and restraint which they can employ in crisis situations.
