68039 (2024). Hon Willow-Jean Prime to the Minister of Education: What advice, if any, did the Minister receive regarding availability of the free te reo Māori courses provided by Te Wānanga?
Hon Erica Stanford: I have been informed by the Ministry that anyone interested in learning te reo Māori is able to access courses in the tertiary system (with availability of specific courses depending on funding allocation and provider capacity). Te Reo Māori courses in the tertiary system are funded via a funding category for ‘te reo Māori’ courses. Just over 80% of te reo Māori course delivery was by the three Wānanga in the tertiary system, and much – but not all – of this delivery is offered with low or no fees to learners. At a high level, course capacity is generally linked to the extent which courses require face-to-face interaction (including via teams, etc) and assessments by tutors.
