Dr Lawrence Xu-Nan to the Associate Minister of Health: Is the Government concerned that only 20-50% of people affected by dementia in "high income countries" can get a formal diagnosis and, therefore, access to appropriate treatments and care; if so, what immediate plans does the Government have to address this problem in Aotearoa; if none, why?

Hon Casey Costello: I would be concerned if people in any country were unable to receive a formal diagnosis. I am advised that access to timely diagnosis is a priority in the dementia mate wareware action plan, and a priority for the dementia mate wareware ecosystem leadership governance group. I am further advised that Health New Zealand is leading the Primary Care Development Programme, which is focused on areas that will strengthen general practice including investment, funding, ensuring continuity of care, and developing the primary healthcare workforce. Access to effective primary care services is key to supporting the early diagnosis of dementia, and to supporting those living with dementia, and 98% of New Zealanders aged over 65 are enrolled with a general practice.
