67849 (2024). Dr Lawrence Xu-Nan to the Associate Minister of Health: Is the Government aware of international research that identifies the 14 lifestyle factors that can reduce the risk of developing dementia; if so, what immediate plans does the Government have in place to fund and implement a risk reduction strategy to help reduce dementia risk for New Zealanders?
Hon Casey Costello: I am advised that the Ministry of Health is aware of the 2024 report of the Lancet Commission on dementia prevention, intervention and care which outlines 14 lifestyle factors that can reduce the risk of developing dementia. While there are currently no plans to fund or implement a risk reduction strategy specific to reducing the risk of dementia, there are areas of focus for health which plan to address some of the risks factors outlined by the Lancet Commission. As part of the Government Policy Statement for Health 2024-2027, the Minister of Health has focused on accelerating action to address non-communicable diseases, through addressing five modifiable risk factors: alcohol, tobacco, poor nutrition, physical inactivity and adverse social environments. Additionally, government agencies have a range of work programmes associated with further risks factors, such as the hearing aid funding scheme and support for the cost of eye tests and glasses for those who are on low incomes or the benefit.
