66461 (2024). Tamatha Paul to the Minister for Children: Further to WQ answer 63873, how long was the young person placed in secure care for, and what interventions were considered or undertaken, if any, prior to the young person being placed in secure care?

Hon Karen Chhour: I am advised by Oranga Tamariki that the young person in this instance was preventatively placed into secure care, due to not responding to staff who were working to de-escalate his behaviour. The young person was in the secure care unit for 24 hours. I am further advised that when a young person is in secure care in any youth justice residence a daily review happens, with the young person involved, and as soon as there are no longer grounds for secure care they exit immediately.
