66391 (2024). Dr Tracey McLellan to the Minister of Corrections

66391 (2024). Dr Tracey McLellan to the Minister of Corrections: When, if at all, is the Minister looking at changing the current limit on prisoner numbers at Auckland Prison, through its unitary plan?
Hon Mark Mitchell: I am advised that Corrections has no immediate plans to expand Auckland Prison.
Rather, the decision to submit a fast-track approval application regarding Auckland Prison’s capacity is a step Corrections has taken to future proof the prison network. Doing so enables Corrections to be prepared and able to change the limit in the future should it be required to ensure they can continue to effectively manage prison capacity in the years ahead, while supporting rehabilitation and reintegration efforts.
The safety and security of prisoners, staff and the community is Corrections’ top priority.
This is also my response to WPQs 66392 (2024), 66393 (2024), 66394 (2024).
