66343 (2024). Arena Williams to the Minister for Building and Construction: Who is the Government currently consulting with on creating a new offence in the Building Act for deliberately hiding non-compliant building work in the context of remote inspections, and how, if at all, can the public input into this process?
Hon Chris Penk: The Government is currently undertaking broad public consultation on options to increase the use of remote inspections, which includes a potential option to create a new offence to deter deceptive behaviour in the context of a remote inspection. I announced the public consultation on 2 October 2024 and further coverage was provided by media outlets. MBIE has also publicised the consultation through emails to stakeholders and information on relevant web pages. The public can make submissions by email, mail, or an online form on the MBIE website here Consultation on increasing the use of remote inspections in the building consent process | Ministry of Business, Innovation & Employment (mbie.govt.nz). Submissions close 5pm, 29 November 2024.
