66305 (2024). Hon Ginny Andersen to the Minister of Police: How many of the 791 removals from the National Gang List between December 2023 and February 2024 were individuals who were deceased and thereby removed from the list, if any?

Hon Mark Mitchell: I refer the Member to my response to Written Parliamentary Question 44615 (2024) which shows that there were 69 individuals removed from the National Gang List (NGL) between December 2023 and February 2024. I am advised that of those 69 individuals, Police’s information indicates eight individuals are deceased. Police does not record the reason for removals, and it may be that the eight deceased were removed for other reasons. Removal from the NGL can be initiated by a range of circumstances, including but not limited to: • New information leading to Police forming a new assessment on the person’s membership status. • New information contrasting or negating a prior membership assessment. • Contradictory information preventing a clear membership assessment from being reached. • Historical information being removed for not meeting Police current quality standards. A single person can be added and removed from the NGL multiple times throughout their life as new information is processed by Police. In this context, ‘Removal’ means that an individual who was present in one NGL instance did not appear in the one that immediately followed it. Reasons for removal are not recorded in a form that allows for their retrieval and collation and cannot be obtained without manually reviewing each removed individual between each NGL instance.
