66285 (2024). Hon Phil Twyford to the Minister of Foreign Affairs: When the Government was advised a group of countries were considering a case against Afghanistan in the International Court of Justice, was New Zealand invited to be a party to that case at that time, or at a subsequent date?
Rt Hon Winston Peters: No case has been initiated at the International Court of Justice (ICJ). Canada, Australia, Germany and the Netherlands have announced their intention to engage with the de facto authorities in Afghanistan on obligations set out in the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW), which may include an eventual case at the ICJ depending on the outcome of that engagement. The Government was advised of this in early September.
