64715 (2024). Hūhana Lyndon to the Associate Minister of Health: What independent advice, if any, has she received on data from the Tobaccos Institue of Japan and Phillip Morris International?
Hon Casey Costello: If the Member is referring to general advice received about data from the Tobacco Institute of Japan or Phillip Morris International, then none. However, if the Member is referring to the peer-reviewed article released on RNZ titled “What is accounting for the Rapid Decline in Cigarette Sales in Japan?”, then data from the Tobacco Institute of Japan and Phillip Morris International was used in that study. I would note for the Member that one of the authors of that article “… has also been a paid expert witness in litigation against the cigarette industry.”, while another author “… does not accept money from any entity with a financial interest in promoting any tobacco or nicotine product, nor from any organization that promotes an abstinence-only position on nicotine and tobacco products.”.
