64028 (2024). Tangi Utikere to the Minister for State Owned Enterprises: Has KiwiRail provided the Minister with any long-term maintenance plans for the Interislander ferry fleet through to 2029, and if so, what are the key elements of these plans?

Hon Paul Goldsmith: Following the decision to cancel the Hyundai Mipo Dockyard contract in February 2024, KiwiRail commissioned Den Norske Veritas (DNV) to undertake an assessment of the Interislander fleet and recommend actions needed to ensure the existing fleet continued to operate safely and reliably until 2029. A high-level briefing on the key elements of this assessment, and proposed maintenance plan has been shared with my Office. The detailed elements are commercially sensitive to KiwiRail and cannot be disclosed. KiwiRail has made public a summary of the work undertaken by DNV.
