63920 (2024). Hon Dr Ayesha Verrall to the Minister for Tertiary Education and Skills: What consideration, if any, has he given to increasing the cap on the number of training places available to prospective medical students at Otago and Auckland Universities?
Hon Penny Simmonds: As part of Budget 2024, the Minister of Health announced that the cap on the number of first-year medical school places funded by the Tertiary Education Commission will increase by 25 places from the start of 2025.

In 2024 there are 589 first-year places. In 2025 there will be 614 places. The increase will be shared across the Universities of Auckland and Otago.
Any further increase for 2026 will be considered in the context of Budget 2025.
