63873 (2024). Tamatha Paul to the Minister for Children: How many times, if any, has physical force been used at the Military-style Academy?

Hon Karen Chhour: I am advised that there has been one low-level use of force during the Military-Style Academy Pilot. For the safety of those around him, a young person was preventatively placed into secure care. In line with the standard operating procedure for use of force, a physical hold was used to move the young person into the secure care unit. I am further advised that all uses of force are reviewed to determine if they were appropriate or not. This use of force was reviewed and was found to be appropriate. All youth justice residences have a designated secure care unit which can be used as an intensive response if a young person is displaying behaviour that could, or has, resulted in harm towards staff or other young people.
