Hon Dr Ayesha Verrall to the Minister of Health: What measures, if any, is he and/or Health New Zealand taking to implement the strategy reviewing the impact of the target programme regularly, as per the briefing titled managing the potential for gaming and unintended consequences of health targets, as at 24 September 2024?

Hon Dr Shane Reti: I am advised that while developing the health targets and the implementation approach, Health New Zealand has also developed a suite of balancing metrics that will be used to understand where any unintended consequences occur. That will include specific monitoring for gaming. I am further advised that there is weekly, monthly, and quarterly performance reporting to support progress towards meeting the target milestones, plus meetings with Districts and Regions regularly where identified risks are discussed.
