61513 (2024). Dr Lawrence Xu-Nan to the Associate Minister of Education: What, if anything, is involved in the 'fit and proper persons test' as part of the applications process for Charter Schools?

Hon David Seymour: The Education and Training Amendment Bill provides the criteria for assessing whether a proposed sponsor and governing members are fit and proper persons. This includes the Authorisation Board (the Board) taking into account whether the proposed sponsor has been convicted of any offence or owes or has owed money to the Crown. As part of the call for applications for sponsors of charter schools, the Charter School Agency (the Agency) required all applicants and known governing members to complete statutory declarations that responded to the criteria in the legislation for sponsors and governing members. As part of the Board’s process to approve charter school sponsors, the Board will review all the statutory declarations. Completing a statutory declaration does not preclude the Agency or the Board from carrying out other due diligence at their discretion.
