61463 (2024). Ricardo Menéndez March to the Minister for Workplace Relations and Safety: How many migrant exploitation complaints were received by the Labour Inspectorate in 2023/24 through the 0800 helpline or the web form introduced in 2021, and how many of these, if any, led to the complainant being granted a Migrant Exploitation Protection Work Visa?
Hon Brooke van Velden: For 2023/24, MBIE’s Employment Services received 4,232 calls (3,786 answered) via the 0800 phone lines relating to migrant exploitation. In addition, 2,585 complaints were received via the migrant exploitation webform for 2023/24. Across these two channels a total of 3,835 migrant exploitation complaints were received.
A further 90 were received through internal transfer or other channels. Calls and submissions via the webform are for a range of reasons, including the submission of complaints of potential exploitation, follow up on existing complaints/investigations, general information and advice.
Immigration New Zealand received 2,366 MEPV Applications and approved 2,070 in the 2023/24 year. Only MEPV applications including a Record of Exploitation Assessment Letter (RoEAL) provided by Employment Services are able to be approved.
