60768 (2024). Ingrid Leary to the Minister for Mental Health: Does the Minister agree with forensic psychiatrist Dr Erik Monasterio that the World Health Organisation has made clear that the minimum number of inpatient psychiatric beds, for appropriate care, in any country, is 50 per 100,000 in population so New Zealand is under resourced at 31 inpatient psychiatric beds per 100,000 in population; if so, what, if anything, is he doing to address this?
Hon Matt Doocey: I am advised that international comparators for bed rates must be utilised with caution as they do not account for differences between jurisdictions in wider system arrangements, such as funding models, legislation, and community beds and supports.
