Hon Dr Ayesha Verrall to the Minister of Health: What progress, if any, was made in the quarter April to June 2024 to ‘Enhance prevention campaigns, including promotion through a range of settings’ under Outcome 3: New Zealanders have fewer cancers, as part of the New Zealand Cancer Action Plan 2019 – 2029?

Hon Dr Shane Reti: I am advised that during the April to June 2024 quarter, the following progress was made: • Advertising Service Orders were signed with two creative agencies to undertake a new BreastScreen Aotearoa promotion campaign. • Health New Zealand progressed translations into eight Pacific languages for the National Cervical Screening Programme’s main A5 Pacific booklet resource and videos. • Engagement with Te Wananga o Aotearoa and a number of Marae across the country and screening and Support to Screen Service providers and Hauora services continued. • Planning was undertaken for a variety of Pacific and Māori community activations and screening events to be held during Cervical Screening Awareness Month in September. • Approval was given and funds allocated for the production of Provider Event kits that will be distributed to 42 cervical screening providers and Support to Screen Services to further enable community activations/promotion of cervical screening in communities during Awareness Month and beyond. • A primary care focus on bowel screening in May saw nearly 300 general practices and clinics joining a campaign in which doctors and nurses talked to patients eligible for the free National Bowel Screening Programme, and ordered self-test kits for patients.
