59973 (2024). Chlöe Swarbrick to the Minister of Education: What guidelines, if any, are used by educators to provide support for a neurodiverse student in high school, and what treatment management, if any, is applied for them?

Hon Erica Stanford: To support schools with the design and delivery of their curriculum, the Ministry of Education (the Ministry) has a set of informative guides and learning modules for teachers and leaders in schools, with a focus on planning for and meeting the needs of diverse learners. A number of these guides have a focus on neurodiversity such as Autism, ADHD, FASD, Dyslexia, Dyspraxia, and Acquired Brain Injury. The guides are publicly available here: https://inclusive.tki.org.nz/. Along with online resources and curriculum supports, schools can also request specialist support though the Ministry and the Resource Teachers Learning and Behaviour (RTLB) service. Specialist staff work with school teams (including Learning Support Coordinators and SENCo), students and whānau to help address the learning and wellbeing needs of students, including neurodiverse students. Treatment management is a medical term and is not used within education.
