59169 (2025). Shanan Halbert to the Minister for Universities: What extra funding or support, if any, will be given to universities to help them achieve the goals outlined in the Tertiary Education Strategy?
Hon Dr Shane Reti: The Government invested over $2.1 billion in the university sector in 2024 via the Tertiary Education Commission’s investment process. Budget 2025 invests an extra $398 million in tertiary education over the next four years include increase in tuition and training subsidises in many subjects across all levels of tertiary study, additional lift in subsidises at degree level and above in high demand “STEM” subjects, and fund forecast enrolment in 2025 and 2026. The Tertiary Education Strategy (TES) will inform how this funding is prioritised and the performance expectations that will go with it. It will also inform ongoing policy decisions, including via the Budget process. The establishment of the University Strategy Group provides a mechanism to coordinate effort across the university system to deliver on the priorities outlined in the TES.
