59156 (2025). Arena Williams to the Minister for Building and Construction: If removing buildings in Auckland, Northland and the Chatham Islands from the earthquake-prone system will "free up funds", how, if at all, will those funds be made available for "challenges more relevant to locals, such as flooding and coastal erosion"?
Hon Chris Penk: Removing Auckland, Northland and the Chatham Islands from the earthquake-prone building (EPB) system reduces compliance and administrative costs for building owners and territorial authorities. This means those resources can then be used to manage other risks, such as flooding.
