59149 (2025). Arena Williams to the Minister of Commerce and Consumer Affairs: Does the Minister support the Salvation Army's call for Buy Now Pay Later schemes to be banned for the purchase of alcohol?

Hon Scott Simpson: Buy Now Pay Later loans are regulated by the Credit Contracts and Consumer Finance Act 2003 (the CCCFA) as of September 2024. The CCCFA does not directly control what types of products, such as alcohol, can be purchased on credit. I will wait to understand the impact of current regulation before considering any changes to how Buy Now Pay Later loans are regulated. Officials at the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment are monitoring the regulation of Buy Now Pay Later loans.
