Hon Rachel Brooking to the Minister responsible for RMA Reform: Does she agree with Deputy Council Chair of Environment Canterbury, Iaean Cranwell who said the Council’s ability to respond to nitrate pollution was “hamstrung” by the upheaval of freshwater and resource management laws?

Hon Chris Bishop: The Government is focused on reforming resource management laws, and the new system will include clear environmental limits. The reforms will restore balance in how freshwater is managed across the country and ensure the interests of all water users are reflected. Regional Councils must work within the legal framework, including national direction.
