Ingrid Leary to the Minister for Mental Health: Does the Minister agree with Melbourne University’s director at the Centre for Mental Health and Community Wellbeing Professor Jane Pirkis that "suicide is often thought of as stemming from mental illness, but factors like financial hardship, social isolation, discrimination, and domestic violence and abuse wield a major influence"; if so, what, if anything, has he done to address this?

Hon Matt Doocey: I understand that the circumstances and factors that lead to suicide are complex and require a whole-of-society response. This Government is committed to suicide prevention. Earlier this month i launched a draft Suicide Prevention Action Plan for public consultation at a summit at Parliament to mark world suicide prevention day. This plan will help provide a refreshed focus for New Zealand’s suicide prevention efforts to best meet the current challenges.
