58139 (2024). Teanau Tuiono to the Minister of Education: What analysis has the Minister of Education received, if any, on the impact of making the teaching of te reo Māori a downgrade from being a primary objective in the Education and Training Act on the provision of te reo Māori learning in schools?
Hon Erica Stanford: There is no intention to downgrade the teaching of te reo Māori that forms part of Te Tiriti o Waitangi objective in section 127 of the Education and Training Act (the Act) 2020. Public consultation on the proposals to amend section 127 of the Act are currently taking place, which includes consultation with Māori education organisations. No consultation with Te Taura Whiri, iwi, hapū or Māori education organisations took place before the proposals were released for public consultation. On 7 June 2024, I received a report titled Amendments to section 127 of the Education and Training Act 2020. This is also my response to written parliamentary questions 58141, 58143, 58144, 58145 (2024).
