58000 (2024). Rachel Boyack to the Associate Minister of Agriculture: What advice, if any has he received from the Ministry of Primary Industries regarding the reports of sheep being farmed in mud in Southland?
Hon Andrew Hoggard: I am advised that the incident you refer to was investigated by the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI). Animal Welfare Inspectors visited the property on 8 September. MPI’s inquiries found two dead sheep as seen in a video on social media, had been placed there by the farmer for pickup while he prioritised moving other sheep and lambs from areas affected by the unexpected change in weather. All sheep have since been moved to drier paddocks. MPI has spoken with the farmer and will not be taking further action.
