57943 (2024). Lan Pham to the Minister for Biosecurity: Does the Ministry for Primary Industries have a response plan for the potential incursion of avian flu?
Hon Andrew Hoggard: MPI has developed a number of plans and procedures covering various aspects of an incursion which continue to be refined, and will retain a level of flexibility given the evolving nature of the risk from the disease. Planning efforts are focussed on working with industry, local government, the Department of Conservation and health agencies to develop a coordinated national approach.
MPI is also focused on enhancing response preparations for the commercial poultry industry, including the ability for operators to respond to and manage an outbreak themselves, as well as supporting work being led by other agencies, including protecting native species and keeping people safe.
As the disease is expected to become established in wild birds, should it arrive, MPI is working with industry on the long-term management approach for commercial poultry operators. This will include increasing industry-led farm level biosecurity preparedness activities and improving ongoing risk mitigation and management of the disease.
