57693 (2024). Scott Willis to the Minister of Science, Innovation and Technology: Has the Government undertaken work to assess what areas of nationally or internationally significant expertise and research activity may be at risk due to operational decisions made in response to decreased funding within CRIs, universities or other institutions?
Hon Judith Collins: I expect individual research organisations to make informed and strategic decisions in responding to financial constraints, while ensuring they are well placed to deliver the research under their core remit, as communicated to the CRIs in my Letters of Expectations.
The government maintains oversight at a system level to ensure our areas of strategic interest are maintained, and to this extent my officials will continue to monitor the ongoing response of CRIs and other institutions to a financially constrained environment, including regular engagement and reporting to understand the implications of operational decisions.
