Scott Willis to the Minister of Science, Innovation and Technology: What concerns, if any, have been raised about maintaining international research partnerships and ensuring confidence from sectors like insurance, reinsurance, and investors in New Zealand's ability to manage seismic and climate risks?

Hon Judith Collins: In August I received a letter from a group of international scientists raising their concerns about proposed cuts at GNS Science. I assured them the Government is acutely aware of the risks posed by natural hazards and the critical research and capability required to improve New Zealand’s resilience. We also understand the significant contribution this work makes internationally and the international collaborations and investment it attracts. The Government will continue to support New Zealand researchers to engage in valuable international collaborations and continues to seek opportunities for expanding global cooperation. One of the first successful Horizon Europe projects featuring New Zealand partners focused on developing digital tools to aid disaster resilience. In August, we partnered with Japan to publish a joint call for collaborative research proposals in the field of disaster mitigation, response, and recovery, focused on the application of advanced technologies.
